The Bent Brick

A few months ago I shot some photos for a review of the then newly opened Bent Brick, an endevour of Park Kitchen success Scott Dolich. For this joint Dolich paired with Will Preisch, who heads the Brick's kitchen. Preisch and Dolich are definitely going for something different here, from the interior vibe, to the unique fare. Super high ceilings, cool seating nooks carved out of wood, and lots of brick and mortar adorn the cute little building at the corner of NW 16th & Marshall. It's a tavern for Northwest Portland for those that don't want standard tavern fare, nor peanut shells underfoot. The food is a unique blend of Prieisch and Dolich's trend for local, sustainable, and thoroughly imaginative. Mixing ingredients and techniques that result in one-of-a-kind flavors, layers and layers of them. And don't even get me started on the wicked tasteful drinks! Dolich brought in master mixologist Adam Robinson to make sure the cocktails matched the food. The Bent Brick, not your average NW tavern.

Honda in Oregon

A few weeks ago I did a job for Honda, focused on iconic areas of NW Oregon. We started the fast-paced three day shoot in Hood River, then sped out to Cannon Beach later that first day to catch the sunset behind Haystack Rock. On our way back from the coast we got detoured about an hour-and-a-half out of our way due to tunnel maintenence, which was very unfortunate given that we had an early call the next morning. Bonus was that we had an RV to work out of for the three days, so it was easy enough to relax a bit on the way back to town. Our next two days were spread over several locations around Portland, including the Hawthorne Bridge, a Food Cart pod downtown, The Rose Gardens, The Chinese Gardens, the Pearl District, the Crystal Ballroom, and the old Wilson High School.

It was fast and furious, but lots of fun nonetheless. Great bunch of crew and talent to work with, including the super cool and capable crew of Gearhead Grip and Electric, who were pinacle in pulling off the whole thing smoothly.

Alice in Chains

Once again, getting to appreciate shooting in the Coliseum. At Alice in Chains the barrier was so far back, it made the pit feel like a bike lane or something. So much room to move, even though there was only 4 of us. Isn't that the way though? When there's 10 photogs in the pit, it's like 4ft wide. This was a good show, killer music of course, but it just wasn't the same without Layne. It was good, however, to hear the familiar rip and tear of a classic grunge band live again, shot me straight back to '94.

Arcade Fire

Just a quick post about shooting the Arcade Fire show the other night... Used to hate shooting in the Coliseum, the light is always a challenge. But for concerts, it isn't bad. Stage lighting is usually adequate, albeit less than spectacular sometimes. For Arcade Fire it was nearly perfect. Rich, juicy colors spotting the leading performers, and the occasional full wash when they were all on mic. And you can't beat a well light up crowd shot!

Odd restrictions on this one... Showed up at showtime, as is normal, but had to wait an hour or so before being escorted into position, which was soundboard, terrible static angle. Thanks to seasoned photojournalist Thomas Boyd for having some extra glass!! Further restrictions were explained to us as we were all herded in through the backstage area..."don't shoot the crowd, especially during the moments as we're walking in. If your lens swings towards the crowd, you'll be tapped out. And don't make me run, I hate to run... You've got two songs. When you're done, we'll walk you out. And oh yeah... you must surrender your credential before we get to the back door, other photogs have tried to re-enter after leaving." Dude... Really? Walk me out to my car already, that Gaga credential on my 'Wall 'O Fame' is gonna get me sooo far, really dude.

TNT Ice Cream

Timothy Croghan makes Ice Cream, with a kick. He infuses his confections with heavy-hitting liquors such as Maker's Mark, Clear Creek Brandy, and Chipoltlé Vodka, and the results are smooth and flavorful. Most of the alcohol is cooked out in the process of tempering the cream, but the bold flavors of the booze remains. Currently, TNT Ice Cream is only available at Pope House Bourbon Lounge in NW Portland, but Timothy has plans to start serving his goodies from a cart, so keep an eye out for him at your local farmer's market soon.

Justin Bieber

I've shot some pretty loud shows in my career; Metallica, Foo Fighters, they were loud. Weezer, Papa Roach, Buckcherry, Avenged Sevenfold, all very loud. KISS was loud. Normally when it's a loud act, and especially if I'm shooting from the pit, I'll get an email from the promoter to bring earplugs. I got that email before the Justin Bieber show, which I thought was odd, I'm not terribly familiar with his music, but what I had heard, I wouldn't considered LOUD. When I got into position that night I realized that the promoter wasn't warning me about the sound that would be coming from the huge speakers in front of me, but it would be coming from the throngs of adolescent girls screaming behind me. And since this was a sold-out show, the intensity and decibel level of the shrieks and screams was ear-splitting. I could have used double plugs that night.

And P.S. the first image has been selected as 1 of 8 finalists in the Crowd category in this year's PDN Ultimate Music Moment contest. Winners will be announced early Dec. Fingers crossed!!

Limo

Limo, on NW Westover, prepares traditional Peruvian dishes that are rich in color, texture, and flavor. The space inside is intimate and well laid out. It's small, but divided into little nooks, giving each table it's own space. Limo also has a substantial patio that should please diners well into the summer. The food is authentic and flavorful, with ample portions being served by friendly staff. I'm a sucker for a nice table outside, and since Limo happens to be in my neighborhood, you'll likely catch me there enjoying happy hour fare on a breezy summer evening.

Bia Wun "Jelly Beer" at Whiskey Soda Lounge

Bia Wun, thai for "Jelly Beer", at Whiskey Soda Lounge in Portland is sure to become a summertime favorite for eastside evening strollers. 12 or 22 ounce Singha bottles are submerged in a refrigerated barrel filled with ice, water, and a touch of salt. All swishing back and forth like a washing machine. The salt, and motion, keep the water from freezing, even though the temp drops below 0ºC. After a few minutes the beer reaches the perfect temperature. A server taps the bottle on the ground a couple times to activate the slushing action, and inserts a straw. The beer turns soft and slushy, but not icy, perfect for sipping on a warm summer evening.

Craig Snazelle

Jazz Bassist Craig Snazelle came in for some marketing/promo shots, and he brought his beautiful upright bass with him. Craig is a talented musician, a long-time friend, and a recent cancer survivor. Our objective for the shoot was simple; just some good promo shots, nice light, simple. Craig later told me that, without really knowing it at the time, we ended up creating a few images that really summed the way he now feels about life, music, and his bout with throat cancer: Grateful. The last couple images are examples of that.

Tasty & Son's

John Gorham, of Toro Bravo, has a new spin on brunch. It's called Tasty & Son's, and it's good. I recently dropped in to do photos for a review in Willamette Week. I've photographed John before for an article in Portland Monthly, and he's also the father of one of my kid's classmates, so working with him was more of a pleasure than business. The space on N. Williams is open and bright, with a large window up front that floods the dining room and open kitchen with natural light. Parked next that window is a large farm table, perfect for big groups or the solo bruncher that enjoys a communal dining experience. It was also ideal for shooting food. After I was done with my shots of diners, and portraits of John, I asked him to send out a couple specific plates, and said that it would be fine if he wanted to include a couple choices of his own as well. Out came five plates of various colors and textures, and since the light was so nice, I was pleased to shoot them all.

The lighting setup for the plates was Large Window to camera left, 1 Speedlite backlighting the subjects, and a Gold Reflector directly to camera right and slightly above.

Mount St. Helens

May 18th, 2010 was the 30th anniversary of the eruption of Mount St. Helens. On May 15th I rode up to the Johnston Ridge Observatory with my friends, and fellow photographers, Bruce Ely, and Andy Batt. Bruce is a staff photographer for the Oregonian, and was assigned to make a photo for the paper. The night before, he and Andy hatched a plan to go up and camp overnight (Bruce got clearance from the Forest Service ahead of time), in hopes of being there for the perfect light to make some great photos, fortunately, they called me as well.

We hit the road around 1pm on Saturday, stopped for lunch at Rose's in Castle Rock, and got to the observatory around 4. The afternoon was hazy, with a big cloud bank parked over the crater. It was windy, and a bit cold, and I was beginning to realize that it would be a while before that perfect light showed up, if at all. We all had backpacks stuffed with tents and sleeping bags, rain gear, and whatever else we were going to need to stay comfortable for the night, but we had yet to decide where that would be. All of us had slightly different agendas; Bruce had his assignment, Andy's objective was a time lapse sequence that would run throughout the night, and mine was to make a panoramic of the view. So we milled around a amongst the day tripping visitors, hobbyist photographers, and ham radio veterans, trying to decide where we were going to make our pictures from, and where we were going to sleep.

After weighing all of our options, which (briefly) included hiking down into the valley a bit, or up on the ridge, where we'd be hammering our tent stakes into rock and pumice, we decided to go with the level ground and slight wind protection of the path in front of the observatory. No tents of course, just bags and pads. This gave us the ability to manage and operate our gear in a mostly dirt free environment, and since we were able to set up our folding chairs, it felt a bit like three dudes out car camping, which was nice. We sat and made pictures late into the night, talking about how great, and how challenging, it is to be a photographer right now. We ate freeze dried food from bags, and enjoyed it. And we slept sound, with only the occasional stir from a restless chipmunk (which apparently are vicious according to the signs). We got up at 5am to make some more pictures, packed up our stuff, and headed home, stopping again at Rose's for breakfast on the way. I always learn something about my friends when on roadtrips, this time out I learned that Bruce will get recognized anywhere, even on top of a volcano, and that he likes chocolate milk with his breakfast. And I learned that Andy likes his corned beef hash crispy, and that he always brushes his teeth before bed, even when he's sleeping outside.

That perfect light never quite showed up, though we were given a few windows of opportunity during our stay. Here's ten of my favorite images from the adventure, the first being my pano, which is comprised of five frames, and is 1 foot by 6 feet.

Barenaked Ladies

I always enjoy the challenge of shooting something new, or shooting in a new location, keeps me on my toes. While I've shot at Keller Auditorium several times, I've never shot a band there, only theatrical events. Last night, Barenaked Ladies took the stage and rocked the auditorium. I got very little instruction ahead of time as to where to pick up my pass and who my contact was going to be, so I arrived plenty early. Got all the logistics worked out in time to take a front row seat for the opening act, Serena Ryder, who was great. After that, BNL took the stage, and I went to work. Here's a sample of the images I made.

Nickelback

I'm always really stoked to shoot a concert when I know I'm shooting from the pit, which is what I was told the situation would be for Nickelback. Their stage had a thrust with a circular area at the end. My location was at the end of the thrust, and I could move from side to side. Awesome spot, with lot's of potential to work the stage and make unique photos. I was escorted to my position, tested my gear and lens reach, paced off the space so I'd know where everything was when the lights went down, then waited for the band to take the stage. All of a sudden things went from quite and dark, to explosive and chaotic, so I started shooting. Great shots to be had throughout my three allotted song, but they never came out to the end of the thrust. I was disappointed not to get the close-up shots that I wanted, but I think I still came up with some good stuff. Plus, for this show I had tickets in a suite. So I checked my cameras with security, and went to my suite to enjoy a killer rock show with my friends.

Soluna Grill

A couple weeks ago I did photos for a review of Soluna Grill on NE Fremont. I came just at the end of their Brunch service and most of the happy brunch patrons were finishing up and heading out. Co-owner, and Executive Chef Dan Straub, was very accomodating, preparing several plates for me to photograph, as well as being willing and available for a portrait. The plates pictured are as follows: Pork Belly BLT; Maple Smoked Pork Belly, Fried Egg, Arugula, and Tomato, on a Brioche Bun. Cheesy Grits with Prawns; Sauteéd Jumbo Prawns, Crimini Mushrooms, Sundried Tomatoes, Scallions, and Red Eye Gravy, atop Cheddar Grits. And Crab Cake Benedict with Sweet Potato Hash. The day I did the shoot, they also happened to be having their Monthly Supper Club event. It sounded very interesting, so I returned later that night to make some photos of that as well. Each month Chef Straub devises the seven course menu around a fun seasonal theme, this month's was Baseball, with dishes like "Cotton Candy"; Sticky-Sweet Spare Ribs with Roasted Corn Slaw.

Dynamic Lighting Diagram

Katie and I had some free time in the studio yesterday, so we decided to make some portraits of each other. Below is a diagram to the setup.

Jet Black background, 4 AB1600 heads, 1 Speedlite, 1 white reflector. The two rim lights in the rear are on stands a couple feet above the subject, each have 7" reflectors with grids. The Speedlite behind the subject is clamped to a background stand and pointed down as a hair light, it also had a grid. The other head behind the subject has a 7" reflector with an orange gel, and is pointed at the background. The main light has a 22" beauty dish reflector, and is slightly above the subject. Finally, there's a 42" white reflector down low that's bouncing a little fill light back up to the subject.

I've always appreciated when other photogs share the technical elements of a cool photo, so I thought I'd do a little of the same. Enjoy!

Nike Hoop Summit, USA vs World

The annual Nike Hoop Summit basketball game, held at Rose Garden arena in Portland, features teams that consist of the best highschool players in the US vs a team of the best 19-and-under players from around the world. The game was full of great action, with the US team coming back from a 15 point deficit to win the game, 101-97.

The annual Dorchester Conference is a GOP rally, that pumps up the party's constituents and candidates for upcoming elections. This year's conference, held in Seaside, was host to the first formal debate of the Republican's candidates for Oregon's Gubernatorial race, which includes former NBA star, and Portland Trailblazer, Chris Dudley. Dudley's performance was strong, and well coached. He faced Alan Alley and John Lim in the debates, and held his own on most topics. It'll be interesting to see how he plays as the election process moves forward, certainly he's a favorite in the GOP camp.

Michael Bublé

Every concert is different. Different styles of music, different stage lighting, different shooting positions. All of that factors in to how I make photos of the performance. Usually none is too big of a challenge, usually. On this shoot however, one nuisance did pop up that distracted me a bit. For this show, as with most shows, I had the first three songs to get my job done. Around the middle of song two, all of a sudden, some dude starts barking in my ear to sit down. He'd gotten up out of his seat a few rows behind me (I was at row 15) to come and tell me that he couldn't see the show from his very expensive seat because I was in his way (notice in the first photo that most everyone was sitting in their seats, rather than standing). I told him who I was, what I was doing, how long I'd be there, and that this is the spot that Bublé's people had assigned me to. That didn't appease him, as he kept hassling me, so I did my best to ignore him. He continued. That's when the security guard positioned next to me got up and escorted him back to his very expensive seat. For pete's sake... stand for a couple songs dude, it's a concert!

Other than that, it was a great shoot. It was the second time I've shot Bublé, who is a fantastic performer. He belts out those amazing croons and skiddybobs about the stage like a true pro, taking time to interact with the crowd here and there. Great stage lighting too, makes my job easy. He even had some pyrotechnics to start the show off right. Just wish his fans were a little less high-maintenance.

WWE Monday Night Raw

This is always a blast to shoot; lots of dramatic action, pretty lights, and a rowdy crowd that's very much into the moment. Not being a huge wrestling entertainment fan, it's always a challenge deciphering who's who, and what the story lines are. A no-brainer though as far as where to train my lens, constant action. All night they kept plugging the main event bout between Mr. McMahon and John Cena. In typical "bad guy" fashion, McMahon let 4 other wrestlers beat Cena down before he jumped in the ring and held him down for the 3 count. I guess that's the benefit of being the big cheese, rarely is his back to the mat.

Gruner

Got Spaetzle? Gruner does. Complex, rich, and flavorful, this dish hits the mark. The version I sampled when I was in last week doing photos for a review in Willamette Week, featured braised chicken and fresh morels. The next subject sampled was Gruner's duck terrine; tender pieces of roasted duck layered into a tight terrine, served with pickled fiddleheads and grilled bread. The perfect appetizer to warm up my palate for the Spaetzle to come. Gruner's location is pretty sweet too; at SW 12th & Alder it's just uptown enough to make parking easy, or if you live in the hood, it makes for a nice evening walk to dinner. The space is classy and cozy, with a nice bar that offers a good variety of happy hour drink and food specials. If your walk home from work takes you up Alder, a stop in at Gruner for a warm plate of Spaetzle will make your day.

Monster Jam

Big trucks catching big air and crushing cars. What's not to love about that!? Wish they'd let me shoot from the floor, something about liability issues, oh well. What's truly impressive is that those drivers are able to launch their vehicles off those big ramps and stick the landing in such a tight space. Not to mention all that dirt that they haul in and out of the Rose Garden. Ear plugs are a must at events like this, and a respirator wouldn't hurt either, gets a bit smoggy indoors. Monster fun shoot!

Foster Burger

Chef Daniel Mondok is damn serious about good food, in this case good burgers, and Foster Burger is damn good. The product of great restauranteurs and quality ingredients, the new spot at SE 53 & Foster boasts beef from a small ranch in Eastern Oregon, buns baked next door, and produce as local as it can get. Teaming up with Mondok in the burger business is Andy Ricker (chef-owner of Pok Pok, Whiskey Soda Lounge and Ping) and Kurt Huffman (developer of Whiskey, Ping and Grüner), a relationship for success, for sure. On my visit, doing photos for a review in Willamette Week, we sampled the Foster Bacon Cheeseburger, Buffalo Fries, and Frog Legs atop Brussels Sprout slaw. The burger was amazing, especially for the $8.50 price tag. Tender, melt-in-your-mouth beef, cooked to perfection, combined with crispy bacon and tangy cheddar. The Frog was buttery and tender with a lightly crispy coating, an interesting and enjoyable dish. And the buffalo fries had the perfect amount of hot, especially when chased with a pint. But guess what!? People have already caught on, so if your up for really good baskets of burgers and fries, head to Foster Burger, but get there before your too hungry, most nights the lineup starts before the doors open.

Lovely's Fifty-Fifty

Lovely's Fifty-Fifty, born out of the closing of Lovely's Hula Hands, is a new spot on Mississippi featuring fantastic brick oven pizza. The spacious dining room, and open garage door up front, beckons hungry Mississippi sidewalkers in for a look. The handmade, hand rolled pies aren't your standard pizza joint fare either. Offbeat offerings include a squid and black olive pie. Or how 'bout a slice of Nettle and Panchetta (sunnyside egg optional)? If you like brick oven pizza, or if your just strolling in the neighborhood, Lovely's is a fine place to satiate your palate.

Rose City Rollers

I've been fortunate enough to teach a couple classes recently at Newspace Center for Photography in Portland. My last class was called "On Assignment", and it involved me teaching the in's and out's of sports photography, as well as overseeing the class as they covered the season opening bout of the Rose City Rollers roller derby team. The class ranged from hobbyists, to professionals that wanted to expand their skill sets. Everyone had a great time, hopefully learned a thing or two, and came up with some great images. Art Alexakis for Motor Trend

Motor Trend Magazine has an online feature column called Celebrity Drive. This week it profiles Art Alexakis, front man for the multi-platinum rock band Everclear. I did the shoot on a chilly morning at Art's house in Portland's west hills. Before we got started, Art and I headed to a nearby coffeeshop to warm up. We had a nice conversation about living in Portland, being proud parents of young daughters, and life in general. Art was open, and easy to work with, adding some useful creative input as we moved through the shoot. Below are some of the photos we made.

Elton John and Billy Joel

In 2006 I photographed Elton John on stage at Rose Garden arena in Portland. It was on of my first shoots at a big concert, and certainly the highest profile artist I'd ever shot. It was a total thrill, and I've since gone on to shoot many shows and artists of the same caliber. In 2008 I was scheduled to shoot Billy Joel on stage. Something came up last minute that had me out of town the night of the show, needless to say, I was disappointed. Wednesday night, my absence at the Joel concert was vindicated when I was credentialed to shoot the Elton John and Billy Joel "Face to Face" performance at The Garden. The two legends sat at pianos, opposite each other, and belted out classics that had the sold-out crowd on their feet for most of the time I was stage-front. While the lighting was relatively colorless compared to my first Elton John show, the music took center stage and stole the show. Hoffmans return home safely after Haiti earthquake

Joel and Rachel Hoffman were trapped in their apartment building for several hour after the devastating earthquake in Haiti. Returning home to Portland was emotional, after not having contact with their families for several days. Rachel's parents flew up from their home in Sydney, Australia for the reunion. They suffered relatively minor injuries in the quake, Rachel a gash on her arm, and Joel and minor head injury. They credit their survival to having lived on the top floor of their apartment building. The Hoffmans were living in Haiti working with a Christian relief agency.

Melt

Melt, sandwiched between (pun intended) a coffee shop and a nail place on NW 23rd, is a new hot spot for yummy eats, and good cocktails. Small, yet cozy, comfortable, and a good bit hip, Melt's interior is nicely designed and laid out to accommodate in-and-out foot traffic, as well as mealtime diners. Hearty, gooey, sandwiches, like the Pulled Pork with Green Chilles and Havarti, are served with Buckets of Crispy Fries, and a pile of napkins. For the surf crowd, a Dungeness Crab Cake burger and House Salad hits the spot. If your looking for kid-friendly try, the drippy Grilled White Cheddar Cheese and Hearty Chicken and Rice Soup.

Vintage Cocktail Lounge

Vintage Lounge is a classic cocktail bar in the Montavilla neighborhood of Southeast Portland. The space is small, yet accommodating, low lit with rich warm tones, and a beautiful hard plank bar top that was salvaged from an old hop barn. The drink menu is long and varied, with 20 house cocktails laced with housemade tinctures (grain alcohol infused with herbs, spices, and/or fruits), every top-shelf spirit you can think of, and a good selection of beers on tap. Or, if you please, owner Justin Akins drink of choice; an Oly pounder. Vintage also has a yummy bar-food menu featuring Pizzetta and hearty sandwiches using their housemade flatbread, including a spicy Roast beef with Serrano Peppers and a classic Philly Cheesesteak. For something a little different try one Vintage's many Absinthe cocktails. And if you've had too many, one of Justin's fine bartenders will be more than will be happy to order you up a cab.

Willamette Week cover, Rosie Sizer

A few weeks ago Willamette Week ran this cover featuring a portrait I did of Portland Chief of Police Rosie Sizer. While praised by the local mainstream media and locals alike, Sizer recently found herself in hot water after an incident where one of her officers, Chris Humpherys, shot a 12-year-old girl who was resisting arrest, with a beanbag gun. Sizer publicly backed City Commissioner Dan Saltzman's decision to strip Humphreys of his badge pending an investigation. The 1000 members of Portland's police force held a secret ballot to determine whether or not officers had confidence in Saltzman and Sizer. Sizer was only the second chief in 28 years to face such a vote. The day the results were due to be released Saltzman back down, reinstating officer Humpherys to a desk job. Happy Sparrow cafe

Happy Sparrow is a super cute Belmont Street cafe owned by super cute couple Danny and Mary Quach, who are in their shop every morning before even the sparrows are awake, baking up hot pockets of goodness for Southeast Portland's morning people. What are they up to in those pre-dawn hours you ask. Kolaches. A Czech pastry of sweet yeasty dough filled with wonderfully fresh local ingredients, sweet and savory, and baked up puffy and warm. Fresh berry, jelly, and even Nutella filled Kolaches are a favorite with the early crowd, who also come in for a tall mug of Mount Hood Roasters coffee. And for the lunch bunch there's Puled Pork, Sausage and Tillamook Cheese, and even Salmon and Cream Cheese. Pair one of those with a local berry smoothie and you can't go wrong. My visit was around Thanksgiving and I was fortunate enough to sample a special Kolache filled with Turkey, Cranberry Sauce, and Housemade Stuffing. Bring home a sack full of these next year and it's guaranteed no fighting over the dark meat at the kids table.

Nel Centro

My first visit to Nel Centro was a couple months ago, just for drinks with some colleagues. We sat outside in their patio area in large comfy chairs gathered around a raised fire pit, filled with colored glass stones. Imagine a long, skinny, 3-foot-high planter, except emitting colorful fire. I recently had the opportunity to return when I received an assignment to do a shoot for a review of the restaurant. The interior is warm, with soft chocolate and ivory tones throughout. The main dining area is lit with wonderful hanging colored glass globes and lamps, and the large windows of the corner space give it a very metropolitan feel. Executive Chef Paul Hyman's large and open kitchen boasts a brick pizza oven, as well as a fire rotisserie rack. The Herbed Rotisserie Chicken dinner was a favorite on my visit, moist and uniquely flavored. During lunch the pizza oven fires up classic pies and daily specials featuring local and specialty ingredients. They also do great breakfast and brunch services, with hearty dishes like Steak and Eggs, and a delicious twist on Eggs Benedict. Hitting the marks with good food, a cool and comfy interior, hip bar (with fire), and a great location, Nel Centro should definitely be on your "next downtown spot I'm gonna check out" list, and high up.

When I was 15, in 1983, I saw my first concert. KISS, on their Lick It Up tour with Queensryche at Memorial Coliseum in Portland, Ore. I made the 4 hour train ride from Pendleton to Portland alone to meet up with a friend and his older brother, who had a car. The concert, and the weekend really, was a whirlwind of hammering-loud rock music, explosions, and vividly colorful imagery. It changed me as a fan, graduated me to that next level, I could now say that I had experienced KISS in person. And I still have the $20 t-shirt to prove it! (last night they were $50) I think it also influenced how I was starting to see the world differently; a little bigger, louder, and more exciting than what I'd been used to. In a small, yet profound way, I think seeing KISS back then had a hand in shaping me into the creative I am today. I thought about that quite a bit as I was standing in front of the stage last night waiting for the curtain to go down. It was an odd feeling. We'd all been there together before, just under a slightly different dynamic. Now it was time to get to work, to entertain fans with good music and pretty pictures. I think we all did a fine job.

Lighting Zoo Animals

Over the weekend I teamed up with lighting guru Andy Batt to help teach a class at Newspace on how to shoot zoo animals under studio lighting conditions. Essentially, we were there to build and light the sets, and help the students achieve the proper exposure under those conditions. All in all, with all the variables, it was a pretty fun day. I love getting the opportunity to work with unique subject matter. My favorite character (outside of the students) was the porcupine, menacing quills aside, it was adorable.

Sounds easy enough. Right? Wrong. My subject is the Director of a Contemporary Art Center called Disjecta. They were prepping for a Halloween party the next night, and First Thursday showings the following week, so the place was pretty much a mess. The walls were bare except for this one little corner where a couple guys were working on hanging some pieces. Great, a background. I saw a grinder and a piece of pipe laying on the ground and asked if one of the guys could fire up some sparks to make things more interesting. Mission accomplished. I think they came out well for what I had to work with. These were shot with 2 lights; one on the subject, and one on the background. Shot at 1/13 of a second for the sparks effect.

China Design Now

Some images from the China Design Now exhibit at the Portland Art Museum. The exhibit is sponsored by Ziba Design, and one of my semi-regular clients, Li-Ning Sports, a Chinese athletic apparel and footwear company. Li-Ning is in the top 3 worldwide for consumer sales, and is the #1 brand in China with 6800 stores and $1 billion in sales. Mr. Li Ning was a gymnastic Olympian in the 1984 games, and has earned a total of 106 medals throughout his athletic career. Li-Ning Sports celebrates it's 20th anniversary in January 2010 with the opening of it's first U.S. retail store in Portland's Pearl District.

Art Wolfe

I had the opportunity, and great honor, to photograph legendary travel, adventure, landscape, culture, and wildlife photographer Art Wolfe this evening before his multimedia presentation, Between Heaven and Earth, at the Newmark Theater in Portland, Ore. I found him to be absolutely wonderful to work with. Open, comfortable, warm, and funny. Not to mention he's got a great smile. Couldn't ask for much more out of a subject. Art's presentation was fantastic, and included images, new and old, from Nepal, Tibet, India, and Pakistan. Stunning compositions of color, culture, wilderness and wonder. It was also a benefit in support of Braided River, a nonprofit whose goal is to protect the last remaining wild places in western North America. He's truly an inspiration.

I'd hadn't heard of a Mash-up Artist until I recently watched a documentary called Rip, a remix manifesto. Greg Gillis, better known as Girl Talk, is one such artist. He's not a DJ, and he'll be the first to tell you that. He uses only a laptop and music editing software to "mash up" iconic pop and rock songs (sometimes over 20 different songs in one track) and lays them over a heavy hip-hop beat. Like most DJs, one of his great skills is slowly working the crowd into a frenzy through his set. I don't think I've been at a show quite like this. From the unique talent of the artist, to the absolute unity that this packed house of strangers was displaying. Girl Talk, Google him.

The girls from Warner Robins, Georgia went undefeated through the series and into today's final where they won the championship game with a 14-2 victory over the Southwest division champs from Crawford, Texas at the Little League Softball World Series in Portland, Oregon, on Wednesday.

Another fine day at the Little League Softball World Series in Portland, Oregon. Today I covered both Semi-Final games, the first for The Time Herald in Port Huron, Michigan, and the second game for The Telegraph, in Macon, Georgia. My fingers were crossed that both teams would make tomorrow's Final game. Unfortunately, the Central division champs from Michigan lost their game to the Southwest division team from Crawford, Texas, 6-1. The strongly favored Southeast division champs from Georgia took their win with a solid 6-0 victory. Undefeated in the series, they're looking good going in to tomorrow's Final game. Tomorrow's Little League Softball World Series Final game will be broadcast live on ESPN2 at 4pm PDT.

Game 12 of pool play at the World Series of Little League Softball at Alpenrose Dairy in Portland, Oregon. The Southeast team from Macon, Georgia led most of the game until Kylee Barett from the Croswell, Michigan team tied it up in the 5th inning with a 3-run homer. The Southeast champs held strong and took the game, 5-4 in the bottom of the 6th. I doubled up my day rate on this one by shooting for newspapers from both hometowns. World Series of Little League Softball, Southeast vs West

I've been hired by The Telegraph, a newspaper in Macon, Georgia, to cover the progress of the Southeast division champions through the World Series of Little League Softball. Yesterday was their first game in a four game playoff series against champion teams from around the country, they beat the West Champions from Anchorage, Alaska, 7-2. This was a particularly pleasant game to shoot. The day was overcast and cool. Close access at a small ballpark (most of the shots are from atop the player dugouts or above the announcers box right behind home plate). And top-notch athletes playing their hearts out. Easy day at the office. Three more games to go in the division playoffs, then hopefully two more after that if they make the championship playoffs and finals.

Celilo Inn, a Boutique Motel

Last week I had an overnight job in The Dalles, OR. A 50's era motel that has just gone through a head-to-toe makeover. They've hired a PR firm, Media Maison, who then contracted me to make some cool photos to help build "the buzz" for their grand re-opening next month. The "Inn" is perched high up on a hillside overlooking what used to be Celilo Falls, now The Dalles Dam. A nice view of Mt. Hood to the West as well. The interior design and furniture style are definitely cool, but with an abundance of class. The architecture and layout of the buildings screams 50's era family roadtrip motel. Lots of interesting textures and patterns. And the enormous wood laminated beams in front of the lobby and over the pool are impressive and richly finished.

This one started out with just me. Then Anna and I saw the opportunity for some much needed alone time and she decided to come along. We dropped the kid with her Grandma, tanked up the FJ, and hit the road. The original plan was for Anna to lounge poolside while I knocked off my shot list. When we got there we decided it might be fun, and more efficient, if Anna did some of the details on the shot list. We were both thrilled with how it all came out. Her set of images so strongly complemented mine that the overall take was much better than what I could've done alone. And we had a great time doing it. Now we just need to line up more of these, and in exotic locales no less.

Jonas Brothers

I've been shooting big concerts for a few years now, my first was Elton John in 2006, and I've learned a bit along the way. One of the first things I learned was to bring ear plugs, especially when working from the pit in front of the stage. When I found out I'd be shooting this show from a fixed position a good distance away I thought I could leave the ear plugs in the truck. Big mistake. When the near capacity crowd at Rose Garden arena (mostly consisting of teenage girls) became aware that the Jonas Brothers had entered the room they collectively let out the most head-splitting, eardrum-busting, high decibel, high pitched scream, that I've ever heard, and it seemed to last forever. The pop-rock sensations; Kevin, Nick, and Joe Jonas took the stage, making a memorable night for thousands of appreciative fans. The brothers worked the crowd with charisma and solid, pop-rock tunes atop a three-ring stage in the round, bursting with juicy colors and playful lasers. Also on stage with the brothers were members of their backup band, featuring horns and stringed instruments. It all made for a very entertaining performance. Honestly though, I'm so glad my daughter's only 5. I'll deal with all that later.

Barista

Portland is a huge coffee market. Huge. Even Mickey D's has been throwing money around here, albeit with little success. Fortunately, every Portland neighborhood has it's favorite house, and if you live on the west side of the Pearl, your new best stop for local microroast is two-time NW Barista champ Billy Willson's latest endeavor, Barista. Billy's new place up on the docks of NW 13th is the epitome of a good Portland coffee shop; friendly, knowledgeable baristas, a good (but not overwhelming) selection of drinks, and a fast moving line. The menu includes roasts from local (and personal) favorite, Stumptown, as well as Ecco Caffé, Verve, and Intelligentsia. If your looking for something special, and unique, try a cup of vacuum brew, Barista is the only house in town serving it.

The popular comedian and actor had fans rolling in the isles with bits about relationships, un-friending enemies, and dropping his cell phone into pee pee-water toilets. Totally my kind of funny.

Il Divo

The internationally acclaimed operatic quartet Il Divo; Carlos, David, Sébastien, and Urs, crooned their way through Portland Wednesday evening with a stop at Rose Garden arena. The gentleman wowed a near capacity crowd with a heart-warming sound that this uncultured photographer can only describe as carmelized velvet. In addition to elaborate and vividly colorful lighting, the stage's intimate setup was a big hit with fans, many of whom enjoyed a quick handshake or wink of the eye during several songs. The four were open, interactive, and seemed to genuinely enjoy performing. And oh yeah... Man, could they sing. Smooth.

Rally America

Last week the axel-bending, gravel-raising sport spectacle of Rally Car Racing touched base in Portland with a Rally America tour stop at PIR, and Hood River, Oregon. Top pro drivers Travis Pastrana, Dave Mirra, Ken Block, and Matthew Johnson where on hand, and served as open and approachable ambasadors to the sport. Day-one was media day at PIR and I was fortunate enough to be working out of Matthew Johnson's pit with the top-notch Red Bull team. Before warm-ups, Pastrana, a Red Bull athelete, stopped over to say hey and have a ride on Matt's swing bike. Before the day was over I actually found myself sitting co-pilot with pro driver Kristen Tabor, she swung me around a lap on the PIR course, sideways most of the run, that left me grinning ear-to-ear for hours. This was definitely an "I love my job" day. ;-}

Keegan Smith and The Fam

Keegan Smith and his crew (aka The Fam) are an 8-member band pumping out an eclectic fusion of Jazz, Funk, R&B, and Reggae melodies with a sprinkling of lyricly driven Hip-Hop to keep the crowd bouncin'. During most shows the band is also accompanied by a small horn section and a special guest or two, giving them an even bigger sound. Driving the bus is Keegan Smith, who's passion for performing and genuine connection with his audience is obvious. In early May they played the Bagdag Theater in Portland to a sold-out crowd in celebration of their fifth album release, Special Delivery. A few days after the show we did a portrait session. All as part of a new press kit promoting the release of the new album.

You've probably picked up a vegan, applesauce based, whatever pastry at your local hit-n-run neighborhood bakery and coffee shop many times... What? You don't have a place like that in your hood!? Well... Inner NE Sandy rezes have got a gem. Black Sheep Bakery Cafe. Annexed to their commercial bakery, no less! Dodge the delivery trucks outside (both at the bakery and the apparel company across the street) and you'll find a sweet breakfast nook for "working from home", or an almost guilt-free "vegan egg/sausage biscuit" to go. Don't even get me started on their assembly-line, made-to-order organic produce based sandwich counter. Black Sheep goodness, with a NE 19th & Sandy flair.

Market Watch

Portland is chock full of cool produce and specialty markets. From the bustling Farmers Market at the PSU campus, to aromatic and colorful ethnic markets dotted throughout the city. Here's some photos I made recently for a guide detailing these local markets.

Cherry Sprout Produce Market on North Sumner. Great selection of local, organic produce. And a killer bin of employee selected CDs by local musicians.

Fiji Emporium on North Interstate. This small market smells of Garam Masala and Nag Champa. Huge burlap sacks of rice varieties are stacked on a palet in a back room, surrounded by endless shelves of jarred spices and pastes. A deep freezer up front is packed full with New Zealand Lamb Shanks and Chops. They even stock several brands of Rose Water.

Lily Market on Northeast Halsey. If it can be found in Asia, chances are it can be found at Lily Market too. Isles upon isles of specialty ingredients and colorful (and often comical) pre-packaged foods and treats. Five pound bags of Pad Thai noodles? Got 'em! Not to mention the great hot food deli, which includes several versions of Pad Thai. And the always hard-to-find Gummy Grub Worms, or tennis-bal-sized Gummy Soccor Balls.
